The tourist accommodation sector in Portugal registered 1.4 million guests and 3.3 million overnight stays in January 2020, 12.2% and 7.6% more than in the same period last year, respectively. Residents' overnight stays increased by 12.1% and non-residents' by 5.6%. China, Canada and Spain recorded, in this order, the highest year-on-year increases.
"The 16 main issuing markets accounted for 82.4% of the nights spent by non-residents in tourist accommodation establishments in January and showed a growth of 4%. The British market (16% of the total number of nights spent by non-residents in January) registered an increase of 1.9%, continuing successive growth since September 2019", concludes the National Statistics Institute (INE).
According to the INE, "German guest overnight stays (10.8% of the total) fell by 8.6% in January, maintaining the downward trend that began in February 2019. "The Brazilian market (10.8% of the total) grew 6.9% in January, slowing down from the growth registered in December (+10.1%). The Spanish market (9.9% of the total) registered a significant growth of 26.5% this month. In January, the Chinese (+50.3%) and Canadian markets also recorded growth.
