Portugal has 26 awards in the European edition of the World Travel Awards. Lisbon, Porto, Algarve and Azores are among the winning destinations. Among the "stars" are also TAP, the Paiva Footbridges and the Dark Sky Alqueva.

Portugal was elected for the fourth consecutive year as the best destination in Europe in the 2020 edition of the World Travel Awards, according to the results released on Sunday evening.

From the extensive list of awards Portugal has collected 26, among them the city of Porto, with the award for Best City Break in Europe, and Lisbon elected as best destination and cruise port (although these have been suspended since March).

The Algarve was again the best beach destination, Madeira the best island destination and the Azores were distinguished as the European "Oscar" of adventure tourism. In all, Portugal sent about six dozen applications this year.

"It is with particular pride that we received this award, in this atypical year," said the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rita Marques, in a statement released by the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transition.

"It is further proof of international trust in our destination and a recognition that Portugal's attributes remain intact and ready to be discovered by all those who wish to visit us, always respecting the rules defined by the authorities," she added. For Rita Marques, "health, protection and trust are unquestionable synonyms of the national tourist offer.

In this year's edition, besides several hotels and resorts, initiatives and entities such as the Dark Sky Alqueva project (with two awards: tourism development and responsible tourism) and the Passadiços do Paiva (best adventure tourist attraction) or the air carrier TAP, with distinctions as an airline for Africa and South America and also, once again but this time surreptitiously, with the award for the best in-flight magazine - the company finished the publication of the magazine, Up, in March.

In the hotel business, the highlight goes to Belmond Reid's Palace in Funchal, declared best luxury hotel in Europe, to the also Madeiran Pestana Porto Santo, best all-inclusive resort, or even to Sublime Comporta and Valverde Hotel in Lisbon, respectively best boutique hotel and best boutique luxury hotel. Also in Lisbon is the best design hotel (1908 Lisboa Hotel), while the Alentejo gets an "Oscar" thanks to L'AND Vineyards - best wine tourism.
