Lisbon is the third best city in the world for foreigners to live in, after the Spanish Valencia and Alicante, which occupy the first and second places on the list, respectively. Lisbon is, moreover, the only Portuguese city in the "Expat City Ranking 2020", elaborated by InterNations, which contemplates in the top ten plus two Spanish metropolises: Malaga and Madrid.
A total of 66 cities are analyzed in the "Expat City Ranking", which takes into account and/or evaluates five topics: quality of urban life, accommodation (ease of settling down), urban professional life, finance and housing and cost of local living. Lisbon was among the top 10 in three of them: 3rd in accommodation, 4th in quality of urban life and 6th in cost of local living. The capital city has a less positive evaluation in the categories of urban professional life (23rd place) and finance and housing (27th place), still being in the first half of the ranking.
The respondents - in this year's Expat City Ranking 2020, based on the annual Expat Insider survey, more than 15,000 of 173 nationalities and living in 181 countries - say they are dissatisfied with the state of the economy (19%), but happy with the balance between professional and personal life, as well as with their jobs.
The majority of expatriates/foreigners (82%) say they feel at home in Lisbon, a figure much higher than the average (64%), while 79% say they are happy with social life in the capital, much more so than the average in other metropolises (59%).
Foreigners living in Lisbon are still satisfied with their professional situation (79% against 65% in the average of the other cities), but almost three out of eight respondents (37%) said they had difficulties in finding a home, a figure higher than the average of the other metropolises analyzed (27%).
