Ismaili Community in Portugal
Counting around three thousand members, gathered around Ismaili Centres in Lisbon, Porto, Seixal, Oeiras, Setúbal and Algarve are one of the most prominent communities in Portugal. Most of the Ismailis in Portugal came from Mozambique in the 1970s after the colonial war, benefiting from Portuguese citizenship. Having successfully overcome some of the major struggles such as fitting into a different religious background, economic, social and cultural challenges, Ismailis have evolved into an important community highly welcomed and appreciated in Portugal. Most recent and evident proof of this is an agreement signed between the Government of Portugal and Ismaili Imamat for the establishment of the formal seat of the Ismaili Imamat in Portugal. The agreement was signed between His Highness Aga Khan and Portuguese Foreign Minister in June 2015, ratified by the President of the Portuguese Republic. The formal seat of the Ismaili Imamat Delegation is at Rua São Domingos a Lapa in Lisbon.
Shia Muslim Imami Ismailis, generally known as Ismailis, and believed to number 15 million, belong to the Shia branch of Islam. The Ismailis are scattered throughout at least 25 nations including sizeable populations in the U.S and Canada.
