Brazil is among countries with the largest flight of millionaires: 2,000 left in 2017.
Two thousand Brazilian millionaires packed their bags and left the country with their fortunes in 2017, according to data from global market research firm New World Wealth. For the third consecutive year, Brazil ranked in the top 10 of countries with the largest number of individuals owning $ 1 million or more in assets, adding 12,000 "class A migrants" since 2015.
The ranking is part of the Global Wealth Report Review 2018, produced by consulting with the support of AfrAsia Bank and data from the previous year. Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, the company has been tracking the world's wealth movement since 2013.
Portugal is the most sought after destination.
São Paulo was among the seven global cities with the highest index of rich "in flight", accompanied by Istanbul, Jakarta, Lagos, Nigeria, London, Moscow and Paris. In the case of Brazilian millionaires, the new destinations chosen are mainly Portugal, the United States and Spain. Data from the Central Bank show that the first two accounted for 51% of Brazil's record investment in real estate abroad in 2017, totaling US $ 3.2 billion.
Such influx can be explained with the popularity of the Portuguese Golden Visa programme which offers residency with minimum €350 000 property investment in Portugal. In Lisbon itself, the minimum capital investment is €500 000.
