Rejuvenated industrial area along the Tejo docks
Situated between Santos and Belém, Alcântara is a peaceful neighbourhood along the Tejo river with its own daily life, with a twist of alternative culture life, with several old warehouses and industrial buildings alongside the marina.
The industrial Tejo docks and marina and the prominent Oriente Museum are some of the landmarks of the area and LX Factory is definitely one of the city's most vibrant spots. Previously a core of textile production, it has been transformed into a mini-village of design shops, bookstores, restaurants, cafes and bars, art galleries, co-working spaces and hostels – an amazing hub of creativity, leisure, entertainment and culture attracting many visitors throughout the year.
Alcântara is also a residential neighbourhood, which has attracted many Portuguese but also some foreigners, who recognize its attributes as a central, lively but discreet and quiet neighbourhood with lots of life and access to esplanades, shops, cafés and other cultural spaces.
The area is very well connected with other parts of the city by car and public transport - bus, train and tram - and has close access to Ponte 25 de Abril.
With charming restaurants, traditional shops, authentic markets - like Mercado Rosa Agulhas - and walks along the river, Alcântara combines traditional with contemporary. The area has great potential for upward growth and is a popular choice for new residents.
