Lisbon Attracts Dolphins back to the Tagus River

08 April, 2016

Last weekend, the first in April, saw the return of a group of dolphins to Lisbon's Tagus River. The magnificent dolphins surprised a group of sailing students aboard a boat during a class. The dolphins approached the boat coming quite close and luckily some of the students captured their arrival on video.

During the second half of the twentieth century, dolphin sightings in the Tagus River became somewhat of a rarity due to pollution levels, hoewever in recent years they have become more frequent. A study in 2015 found that there is no evidence that the dolphins would re-establish e a fixed community in the Tagus estuary, however the more frequent visits likely due to an improved and healthier ecosytem.
